David A. Sheppard began his career working for the Department of Commerce Office of Inspector General in Washington, DC and has been in the inspector general community for over three decades. He currently overseas the OIG’s efforts to track recommendations issued through OIG audits and evaluations.
In 2014, the Federal Co-chair of the Denali Commission appointed David as the Commission’s Inspector General after acting in that role for one year. He served in that position until September 2017. As IG for the Denali Commission, his office’s mission was to prevent and detect waste, fraud, and abuse, as well as promote economy, effectiveness, and efficiency. He served on the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency’s Professional Development Committee.
The Commerce Inspector General appointed David as the Seattle Regional Inspector General in February 2002, where he had oversight responsibilities for Commerce Department programs and operations.
He began his career in Washington, DC, conducting audits and evaluations of Commerce’s trade promotion efforts, traveling to about 20 foreign countries and almost every state in the United States, reviewing Commerce’s trade promotion efforts.
David has been a member of the Seattle Federal Executive Board since 2002. He has chaired the Board’s fiscal years 2010 and 2016 Combined Federal Campaigns for King County. In addition to the Seattle Federal Executive Board, David is also a board member of the Pacific Northwest Intergovernmental Audit Forum, the Morgan State University Foundation, and is the current chair of the University of Washington’s Evans School Dean’s Council. The Forum represents a consortium of audit executives from federal, state, and local governments, as well as certified public accounting firms and others interested in governmental audits. The Foundation advances Morgan State University’s mission of teaching, research and community outreach by raising and managing private funds for scholarships, faculty, research, facilities and academic programs. The Dean’s Council helps forge meaningful ties with key stakeholders and provides advice and counsel to the Dean on a variety of topics. Lastly, David was formerly the board chair of Seattle Academy (SAAS), an independent middle and high school in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.
